The City of Fort Walton Beach is partnering with RedSpeed USA to launch automated photo enforcement in school speed zones. Click here for the video
The photo enforcement systems use radar to detect speeding vehicles. If a vehicle is traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, a camera captures an image of the vehicle’s license plate. After review and verification, a civil citation will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.
The fine for each violation is $100. These citations are civil infractions and do not result in points on the driver’s license and do not impact vehicle insurance rates. Vehicle owners may pay the fine online, by phone, or by mail, or they may request a hearing to contest the citation.
The enforcement system will be active 30 minutes before school starts, throughout the school day, and stop 30 minutes after school dismissal. It will not operate on weekends, holidays, summer break, or other times when school is not in session.
The system will begin a 30-day warning period starting April 1, 2025. During this time, motorists who speed through school zones will receive a warning notice in the mail rather than a citation. The goal of this warning period is to educate drivers and encourage them to comply with posted speed limits. After the warning period ends, citations will be issued.
“This system is an effective tool to encourage compliance with speed limits, ultimately protecting students and pedestrians,” said Police Chief Robert Bage. “Photo enforcement ensures consistent and equitable speed enforcement every school day, regardless of police staffing levels. This technology encourages long-term behavior changes by reminding drivers that school zone speed limits are always enforced, creating a safer environment around our schools.”
